Roman and the truck

Roman came to visit the week following the 4th of July. Dennis and I drove to Steelville, MO to meet Matt and Audrey and Roman and spend the holiday weekend with her family, camping in a cabin and canoeing on the Meramec River. We then drove home with Roman and will fly him back to WI this coming Friday!

This was this morning - we had about a foot of snow and a day and a half off from work!

When Dennis got home yesterday we made a snowman, took a walk in our "village" to see the other snowpeople and had a snowball fight with Mary!

Trip to Seattle, May 23 - 30, 2009

Our time began with a car trip from Seattle across the Cascades to Yakima to visit Dan and Brynn in their new home - it is so cozy and comfortable. They had just gotten new living room furniture.
The second day we were there, we went back to the vineyard where they were married, Silverlake - the winery had added a lot of outdoor features like this waterfall.

We also went to a farmer's market to get fresh asparagus for dinner - we went to Jim and Dixie's after this for an evening on their beautiful back porch that overlooks the Yakima valley.
The next day, Daniel wanted to take us to a look out near Mt Rainier after a 4 mile hike - this was on the way with the mountain in the background. It was still really cool - temp wise

Well, we didn't quite make it to our destination cuz the roads were either closed or still had snow. The one we tried to take caused our vehicle to high center and if it wasn't for a couple of good samaritans with a shovel, we'd probably still be digging out - about a foot of snow. On our way back, we stopped to see this enormous cedar.
On our way down, we stopped at this lookout to take in the view - there was an enormous water fall to our right that plunged hundreds of feet to the valley floor.

We also stopped to look at this still frozen lake, Dog Lake - you can see a tire in the water!!

I left on Tues of that week for Seattle to attend American College of Sports Medicine meetings but dad remained with Dan and Brynn for the rest of the week
They went target shooting...
They weeded Brynn's iris garden and then they brought dad back to Seattle on Friday
We went on a Duck tour that used amphibious vehicles from WWII - the ride went all over Seattle and finally out into Puget Sound to get a watery view of Seattle - our guide was hilarious. In addition to Dan and Brynn, two of my grad students joined us for the afternoon.
We saw this former coal gasification plant that had been turned into a city park during our tour -
And then all too soon it was time to head back to Texas. Dad took this picture of Mt St Helens from the air - you can tell where it erupted. You can also see some of the other volcnic peaks in the background - we had such a great time - wish we lived a lot closer!!

Congo comes to live with us, icestorm and Korean visitors!

The weekend before Kate and Charlie left, we had Sam and Woan, John and Barney and us over for dinner. The following night Kate and Charlie prepared a traditional Korean meal for the 6 of us - we will be sad to see them leave.

On Feb 5, the weekend after Dana came, we became home stay parents for Kate, shown at left, an English teacher from south Korea. She is a Fulbright scholar and she and 37 other Fulbrights flew into Texas on Jan 5 and stayed for a month at the Texas International Education Consortium in Austin taking intensive English classes. Then they were sent all over Texas, including 6 who came to Denton for two weeks. We did many fun things including taking them to see calf roping, shown above, the National Western Stock Show and Rodeo in Ft. Worth, a Texas barbecue at a ranch up north of town, the King Tut display at the Dallas Museum of Art, many evenings of food and conversation - it was a great experience. Charlie is also shown in this picture and he stayed in the home of our dear friends, the Sanborns - Barney is in this picture.
Congo has an amazing repertoire of songs, sounds, and voices. He is a beautiful parrot, white and grey and a tail that looks like someone dipped in red paint! He is about the same age as Baby - 9 and has really bonded to Dennis. As soon as Dennis walks in the door, Congo flies to him and tries to feed him - yuk. But Dana tells us its his way of taking care of his friend. Our favorite thing he does is at night - right after we cover him up, lift up the cover slightly, he says in his manly voice "Peek-a-boo"!! it's so funny.

Just after the ice storm, we arranged with Audrey's brother Dana to adopt his African grey parrot, Congo - he's on Dennis' shoulder and Baby on his arm - he seems to be adjusting really well, although Baby is scared to death of him. Every time he flies, she runs for cover! It's just as well - he is the ONLY thing she has not been aggressive toward!

The first week of February caught Texans by surprise with an ice storm and we had a day and a half at home during the week. I took this picture the morning after - you can see the ice in the trees. The driveway was frozen solid with about 1/2" of ice - but you have to remember that Texans don't do ice!

Dad and I carted native Texas stones left over from the building of our home to use for the firepit - inspired by Dan and the Minnesota DiMarcos. We lit the first fire last Saturday and burned a lot of yard debris - we can't wait to light it at night!

Our good friend, and pastor, Rocky Ellison recently retired as an American Airlines pilot and we had a retirement party and also celebrated Halloween with costumes. From left, Barney was the nutty professor, John was the ghost of the great depression, Mary and Bob were crossdressers - Bob actually was quite attractive with his makeup!, Rocky was a drunken pilot, Jackie was a phlebotomist, Katie was the injured Cowboy, Jason Whitten, Nancy and Dennis were Sampson and Delilah, Annie was a cat, and Brett was the other injured Cowboy, Tony Romo - we had an awesome time!

The city of Aurora and the Army Corps of Engineers have done an incredible job of controlling the flow of water through Cherry Creek and have created a series of dams, along with hiking and biking trails - it is beautiful.

Cindy and I took several hikes near the Cherry Creek reservoir and it was perfect Colorado October weather.
Barry is so silly - he uses the cat's laser toy with Avari and she chases it and competes with Oscar the cat!
I also spent a couple of days with my sister, Cindy, and her family in Aurora, CO - she made some wonderful meals and here is one of them with Shawney, Erik and Avari, and Tyler.

One of the trips I made this fall (Nancy) was to the US Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs (I was one of 10 invited from across the US - the rest of the participants were Olympic coaches, trainers, and 4 other sports dietitians) and we took a certification course for a new method of body composition analysis using skinfolds, girths, and circumference measurements. I passed the practical exam and now have to complete my certification by measuring 20 people twice...so if I ask you over the Christmas holiday if I can pinch you, just say sure!! This is a picture of two of my buddies - Lisa Dorfman (sports dietitian to US Sailing) getting her bone breadth measured by Suzanne Girard Eberle (sports dietitian in Portland, OR).

A few weeks ago someone decided to tag up Daniel's bike in the middle of the night right in our driveway. Thank goodness they decided to target the bike only, as our other vehicles were close by. We figure that it was probably some of the punk kids that walk the neighborhood pretty regularly - they're young and .... well, young.

We filed a police report and called our insurance company, and although the bike will be fixed I think it hit poor Daniel harder than I thought it would. :(

The bike isn't rideable because they sprayed the mirrors, too.

The good news is that we'll be moving into our new home in two weeks if everything goes smoothly. We are supposed to close on the 13th and be able to move in on the 14th - cross your fingers! Thank goodness, the neighborhood is much nicer than the one we're currently in. Nevertheless, we are looking to get a security system put into the house as soon as possible (the cost will determine how soon, hehe).

If you have time, be sure to give Dan some love - Poor bike. :(

DR. Jacobson - I was invited back to Iowa State University last weekend, Sept 11-13, for DR J's 90th birthday! Dad and I used to take care of his home and dog, Rusty, when he and his wife traveled during our time in graduate school. Dr. J was asked how he wanted to celebrate 90 years and he wanted a research symposium so myself and 7 other of the students from nutritional physiology were invited back to campus to each give a lecture over a two day symposium. I was so honored to be able to do this. I stayed with Meg and Vaughn Speer, my aunt and uncle!

On Friday afternoon, Aunt Meg and Uncle Vaughn and I went to my cousin, Beth's home in Roland, Iowa - about 15 minutes north of Ames. She and her husband Ron have recently completed an addition to their home (they added a house to their house!) and this is it - absolutely gorgeous - mission style with exposed beams, a loft, and solid wood floors!

A week ago, Annie, Dad and I were sitting on the back porch and the light just before sunset was so pretty - this is our view to the south.

And to the north! It has been a really nice summer by Texas standards - we've been able to sit outside many mornings and evenings and really enjoy our porch!

While Annie was babysitting our animals during our trip with the Yosts, she brought her pregnant cat, Missy, to stay at our home with her. The Sunday we were returning from Austin, Missy gave birth, under our bed!!, to 4 sweet kittens, one female and three males. They are 3 tabbies and one black.

Twenty days old! They are Isabel (Izzy for short, my favorite), Bear (the all black one), Pippin, and Colby. He was originally CB for Cry Baby because he is such a momma's boy but Annie decided he needed a more sophisticated name!
5 weeks old - they started eating wet food, pouncing, running - it has really been fun to watch them change nearly every day!

Our summer vacation with the Yosts!!!

We started our trip in San Antonio - this was the first night on the River Walk having dinner!
Our hotel was the historic Menger Hotel, right across the street from the Alamo shown in this picture. The hotel was built in 1859, just 23 years after the battle of the Alamo.
The day after we arrived, we took the Grand Tour which included a tour of the Japanese gardens...
A trip on a boat on the river that runs through the canals of San Antonio....

We also toured Mission San Jose, one of the five missions established by the Spanish. It is the largest and most renowned mission in Texas, has exquisite church carvings and the famous Rose Window.

The Sunday after our tour, we had a relaxed morning sitting around the pool, after the most incredible breakfast I think any of us had ever eaten. We drove to Austin and got our hotel on Lake Travis. Early evening we went to the Congress Street bridge, just south of the capitol in Austin and sat along the river waiting for 1.5 million bats to make their nightly appearance. While we were waiting, a pair of swans swam over to greet us!
This is the bridge from our vantage point.
If you look closely or if you have a zoom option, you can see a faint dotted line above the trees - those are the bats - they stream out in a very orderly fashion and it must have lasted for 45 minutes. It really was one of the most amazing things we'd ever seen!
The next day we visited the Bob Bullock Texas History Museum, one of the nicest museums I think I've ever been to -three stories packed with the history of Texas from the first Indians to the present day.
After visiting the museum, we went to Scholz Garden for lunch - a real German bier garten that has been in Austin since the 1800's!

Bandit brought her two babies up to the house last night and she taught them first how to raid the hummingbird feeder - I followed her with my camera because I knew she was heading for the garage!

You can see the other baby on the floor - that baby attempted multiple times to climb the drawers but wasn't successful - the baby on the workbench even tried to help his sibling but no luck so I had to shoot the video!

Bandit, the pregnant or nursing raccoon visits our house just about every day to raid bird feeders as she is doing here, or to tip the humming bird feeders so the sticky liquid runs over her fur, that she then proceeds to lick. And for the grand finale, she usually squeezes under the garage door to finish up the remains of the cat food, and wash her paws in their water bowl. Living out in the country is always interesting ....

Cheryl Stecher and McLean Sanborn are going to be married on August 24 so Mary, Jackie and I hosted a shower in June for the lovely couple. Both Cheryl and McLean are in medical school so even being able to have some time for the shower was challenging but we had a lovely time - the cake was decorated like a gift! We each brought her a recipe and a gift that would help her make the recipe - so I gave them a recipe for fajitas and all of their grilling accessories. We each brought her a tea cup to have an unmatched set of cups - lots of fun!

Hello everyone!

It has been a while since Dan and I have posted much and I wanted to fill you in on the happenings. As I'm sure you all have heard, I recently got promoted to the Mobile Manager at Best Buy (bwahaha, but I'm hourly so I still get paid well when I work 40 + hours); it's been really exciting and very time consuming as we prepare our store for the Grand Opening of the Mobile department (mobile phones... aka mobile, get it?). Sadly, I'm not very impressed with the attire - I look like a McDonalds supervisor with my blue picnic-like plaid button up t-shirt and my black slacks. I definitely enjoy the blazer, however. I'll be sure to model for you later. Heh... every time I walk by my associates start singing, "Ding, fries are done!" Yeah, yeah! Laugh it up!

Anywho, Daniel has... a secret (I think he's pregnant, he sure has been moody enough). Ask him about it and I'm sure he'll tell you; it's definitely worth knowing. With his new secret and my new job we are looking to buy a house some time in the future - we haven't made any giant strides yet, we've just been poking our noses around and getting ideas. Wish us luck, we're hoping to find a good buy and get a good loan. We have a few options available to us so I'm sure we'll do fine - plus, Pops and Jim will definitely look out for us.

Last but not least, I have been slowly going through and editing pictures from the wedding; I couldn't pass the chance to post this one because I know it has been a while since the DiMarco family has had a picture together. Tell ya what - what a good looking family! Although Matt is right ... one of us certainly does not look like the others. I think I'll ask Santa for a new pair of legs and a spray on tan for Christmas. *Sigh* Dan and I are going to have midget babies, aren't we? Oh well...

Easter weekend

Annie came over for Easter dinner, and yes we had leg of lamb and bunny bread! She brought baby Oliver and put him next to Tasha on our bed and he immediately fell asleep with her - what a sweet kitten. Easter was a wonderful day - we had a lovely church service, and leisurely enjoyed day. John and Barney came for dessert and dad made cappuccinos and I made biscotti!
On Good Friday, I had some of my long time girl friends (all are former running buddies) come visit our home because all of them except Linda King (first on the left) had never seen our home. So in order, Linda King, mom, Elizabeth Fox, Lourraine Little, and Sue Fickey! We went for a four mile walk in the neighborhood and then came back and had lunch on our back porch. It was a gorgeous, 80 degree spring day in Texas!

Lunar Eclipse!

On Wednesday night, Steven and I sat outside and enjoyed the partly cloudy view of a complete lunar eclipse! It was pretty neat...enjoy!

Well....i may look like i'm 29, but my Brain Age to start is 80!!!! I'm going to blame it on the fact that I drive a Sable. Or is it the other fact that I had to say the color BLACK like 20 times until my DS recognized it?!?! Theresa just tested her smarts and she's listed as a beautiful 54yr old. For our New Year's resolution we have a challenge between us on who will have the better score by the end or 08'. I think I have my work cut out for me....oh wait, who can play on the level 'Expert" in Guitar Hero?? i know I can. I'd like to see some 80yr old dude do that! And that's all Guitar Hero is, looking at colors.

A New Year's gift to remember

Happy New Year DiMarco's!

Well things couldn't have gone any better to finish off the year. The past 3 years my core friends (5 of us) would all get together and cook dinner for the spouses/girlfriends. One year we made a 6course lobster dinner. Another year we had a huge fondue party. This year we did homemade pizzas. I got to make all the dough while other friends grated the cheese, cut the meats, made the sauces or put together the appetizers: pork skewers, crab cakes and humus. We started cooking around 4pm and people didn't leave until about 4am. We had a few drinks, played a massive amount of Guitar Hero and had a ton of laughs. And to add to this tradition that we started we decided to toss in a white elephant gift exchange. If you're unfamiliar to what that is...well...to put it nicely, you re-wrap a gift that you really don't care for that you received. I really don't want to say what gift(s) Theresa and I decided to part our ways with...but I will share to you what outstand gift I received in exchange. I was happy to open up a new pair of pajama pants:

Annie and Steven came over this evening to help celebrate Dad's and Sam's birthdays uz I have to teach on Monday nite - we had turkey sandwiches - surprise, surprise. Sam was so appreciative of his birthday gifts - he hugged everyone and then shook Steven's hand and said "how's it going?"

Our guests were the Sanborns, John and Barney, McLean and Caitie and their friends, Sheryl and Eric. I also took pictures of the outside of the house so you can all see that the leaves do change color in Texas - especially our new red oak. And then of course you have a to take a picture of the table. We had a great time - food was wonderful and fellowship the best.

I stopped in Monument, CO to see Shantel and Erik before they went to a youth retreat for Nazarene youth from Colorado. Erik's band played. Our Starbucks waiter was goofy for Avari. Cindy redid her upstairs guest bedroom and she must have had Annie in mind with her mint green and pink.

Mom was invited to US OLYMPIC Training Center in Colorado Springs along with 9 other sports dietitians from the US to see what the dietitians there are providing to their athletes. This picture is the group of us - they are all my buddies from Sports Dietetics-USA and we have all been friends a long time.

I have been desperately trying to get pictures onto this website, but it seems that with our old internet the pictures were just too big and the web would time out before it would load the file... hopefully with our new internet (Charter), it will work this time!

The Ferry Schedule - we weren't about to be late to our destination!

Met up with the in-laws and had a blast...

we went clamming with our bare hands, hiking in sandals, saw the biggest bird ever... Audrey had a few close encounters with some feisty crabs, Daniel made friends with a bee, Matt got "stuck" on a pole... Me? Well, I just took pictures. Hehe. Oh, and I got to whip Daniel with some kelp. I'll show you that picture later! I'm going to bed!

Baby's foraging

Dad and I watched a video from an avian veterinarian who suggested that captive parrots really like to find their food by foraging. So dad bought a ton of leather strips anywhere from a few inches to several feet in length and fastened dixie cups containing lots of treats. He and I then place them on her tree each morning and evening - it's like Christmas for Baby as she never knows what's inside. She figured it out in less than a day about pulling the leather cord with her feet to grab the cup, turn it upside down and use it as a holder to eat out of - she is quite smart! It is also entertaining to watch!

Baby loves to take a shower and it has taken nearly two years of constant coaxing and trying to get her to enjoy it but now she does!

So as you all know, Steven and I went to Mexico on the 24th. Cancun to be more specific, for 5 nights (yes, we had a room with 2 beds Mom) /6 days. Amidst all the merriment, we spared a few moments to capture it on film! What you'll find below is the first installment of what I like to call "The Escapades of Annie and Steven!!!"

For the record, the drinking age is 18!

This is a natural water well that the Mayans used for drinking water. People can swim in it now, but there's a lot of fish, so I let Steven tackle that one!
